I'm working with a group of Homeopaths in Vancouver's DownTown East Side (DTES) which is world renowned for its addicted, homeless and marginalized population. We have North America's first Safe Injection site where we've been invited to help the clients using Homeopathic Treatment. We are 20 Classical Homeopaths looking for anybody's experience and advice with Substance Misuse. We are seeing people in various stages of detox and beyond.
One specific question is how to get them off Methadone without the severe and long-term side effects. They refer to it as 'liquid handcuffs'. Helios has the methadone syrup in various potencies. Has anyone got any ideas for us?
Soon, we'll have our non-profit society status and anyone can become members to show support for Homeopathic Treatment of people with Substance Misuse problems.

Was it from a myelogram dye?
or an epidural steroid injection?

No, though both of those are causes. Mine was the result of spinal surgery - a hemorrhage into the thecal sac. Surgery is now the most common cause of arachnoiditis, though it was once more common from myelograms. The dyes have been diluted, so it isn't as common or usually as severe when from that etiology.
Another cause, not common, but one women need to be aware of, is spinal anesthetic during childbirth. How many women would consent if they knew that they're exchanging a short period of pain relief for the risk of permanent pain that can be just as severe?
It sounds like you're aware of the disease.

Hello Again
Yes I know of complications after an epidural given for birthing C section.
I myself had slight complications from this epidural injection.
I caught the problem immed by dosing with a homeopathic remedy,it resolved itself quickly.
I agree that many mothers/patients in general are not aware of the dangers of "things going wrong" during spinal surgery (or in fact Any surgery). A life long chronic iatrogenic ailments follows them to their grave. What a sad thing to happen.

so u can also prescribe bryonia,lillium tig ,calc. ars as common symtoms in these cases could be fear sufferig,escape attempts,held amel being. one more option could be u can also prescribe Bach flower remedy Crab Apple to these cases as a strong symtom to get rid from pain or even if patient is ready to quit the use f drug.Scleranthus, wallnut can also be used with crab apple which r also Bach flower remedies

You know, I'm wondering if using homeopathic methadone is the best approach. It isn't the drug they got hooked on, so is it likely to be the appropriate remedy?
By the way, do you see much schizophrenia in your clinic?
I'm almost sorry to have moved from Oregon - now am in Scotland - as I'd have loved to get involved with your clinic.

Hi,
here in the centre of Athens i work with heroin addicts, members of a non residential TC called ELEY.SYN.A. Some of them have previously used methadone but their experience has been extremely negative. Lots of pessimism and 'darkness' comes afterwards methadone.
What they use mostly in this community is naltrexone, antagonistic drug of heroin. Interferon is an other medication commonly used in this group, cocaine, cannabis, alcohol.
My expeience so far is positive and i am optimistic with the power of homeopathic remedies.
In the fisrt consultations drainage remedies were used when was appropriate (Chel 6x, Aven sat 6x, Nux v, Sulph, etc) and the next prescription was a constitutional one. What is very interesting with drug addicts is their family history and all the wounds they developed as parts of their family dynamic. Lots of abuse is present in all the cases both physical and mentally.
The drainage remedies were working against the side effects of the conventional abuse drugs and the constitutional remedy was covering the mentals as well in a nice manner.
It took 4 months only to see some of them so positive in thinking and action.
In this community I cooperate with a psychiatrist and he is impressed with the healing power of homeopathy.
Remedies for addiction have been given in the repertories but do not stick only to those remedies. Thymus Gland was also beneficial even when is not included in the repertory.
Sometimes sankaran's method 'sensation method' was in use when some others the theurapeutic prescription was appropriate (see the book a guide to mehodologies in homeopathy, by watson)

Thank you - its so brilliant to hear from your experience. We, too are prescribing a lot of Nux, Carb-v, Avena, and such for the detox part of the process. We seem to be able to reach people's consitutional state even in the first consult which surprised me, however it seems to make sense to me now. I use a lot of Sankaran's method when appropriate. I find sometimes they get overwhelmed with the questioning or feel overexposed afterwards (from feedback from the social workers), but some people are perfect for it! Our issue is that we don't get a long period of following up with them since they either move on to another treatment centre, live outside of the temporary housing where we are working or they go back to using and living on the streets again. Despite this, I feel we are making a significant positive impact and the 'successful' cases keep me going back.

Well, this is extremely interesting topic. Altough you are classical homeopaths (most often I use combinations) I hope you would not mind that I share with you my experience.
I would do the following.
1. For getting someone off Methadone - Methadone homeopathic is necessary, to help this person to replace original sup stance (discover which potency would be most appropriate for this person. Quantity of homeopathic used also matters - the best is to be diluted in the water and drink as often as needed)
2. Find out (I usually use pendulum) what is missing in the personś body which lead him/her to addiction (most usually this is some hormone or neurotransmitter like serotonin, dopamine, melatonin, oxytocin - or sexual hormones, sometimes thyroid, sometimes pancreas ...check all... ). Whatever is missing, at the first stage should be replaced with homeopathic. I think Helios also produces these homeopathic hormones. With balancing hormone levels, person starts to feel well and balanced, what is actually what person really needs and what is the reason why addiction started.
3. Find combination which will soothe and heal (!)the nerves of this person (Kali Phos, Valerian, Passiflora etc)...Vitamins B in addition are also of great help.
4. Find him appropriate single remedy which will not cause any aggravations (aggravations should be avoided, people who are on addictive substances cannot stand aggravations) which will make him/her to really feel better. Colour remedies like Winter Solstice or Summer Solstice could be of great help, I helped a lot of people who had addiction problem with Aqua Nordenau Remedy (I also use radionsics homeopathy remedies which have spiritual vibrations and open hearth chakra).

That's very interesting, Tatjana. The consideration of missing hormones and other necessary metabolic substances is an intriguing idea - one that strikes me as well worth investigating.
