Influenza Virus Resistance to Antiviral Agents: A Plea for Rational Use
doi: 10.1086/598989 PMID: 19115975 Although influenza vaccine can prevent influenza virus infection, the only therapeutic options to treat influenza virus infection are antiviral agents. At the current time, nearly all influenza A/H3N2 viruses and a percentage of influenza A/H1N1 viruses are adamantane resistant, which leaves only neuraminidase inhibitors available for treatment of infection with these viruses. In December 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data demonstrating that a high percentage of circulating influenza A/H1N1 viruses are now resistant to oseltamivir. In addition, oseltamivir‐resistant influenza B and A/H5N1 viruses have been identified. Thus, use of monotherapy for influenza virus infection is irrational and may contribute to mutational pressure for further selection of antiviral‐resistant strains. History has demonstrated that monotherapy for influenza virus infection leads to resistance, resulting in the use of a new monotherapy agent followed by resistance to that new agent and thus resulting in a background of viruses resistant to both drugs. We argue that combination antiviral therapy, new guidelines for indications for treatment, point‐of‐care diagnostic testing, and a universal influenza vaccination recommendation are critical to protecting the population against influenza virus and to preserving the benefits of antiviral agents.
Tamiflu And Relenza Should Have Psychiatric Side Effects Warning, Say Regulators
After receiving reports of patients experiencing delirium, psychosis and hallucinations, US FDA staff recommend that flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza should carry warnings about possible side-effects. Tamiflu is made by Roche Holdings, Relenza is made by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline). Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is a pill, while Relenza (zanamivir) is inhaled.
Reports from Japan indicate that children, particularly, may have a higher risk of experiencing these psychiatric side effects after receiving the flu drugs. Tamiflu and Relenza are the most common medications used for the treatment of flu. Apart from the said side effects, there have also been reports of deaths.

A: Antiviral medicines are being stockpiled by the U.S. government for distribution in the time of need. Physicians and hospitals will be ready to dispense medicines as needed, and we are currently working on strategies for communities to efficiently distribute antivirals. At this time it is generally not recommended that individuals or families develop their own supply of antiviral medications.
Q: Are doctors generally authorized to prescribe preparatory doses of viral agents to currently healthy people? -- Natalie, Coral Springs, Fla.
A: It has been strongly suggested that physicians in the U.S. not dispense antiviral medications to people who are neither infected with influenza nor exposed to influenza. Exceptions are made for people who are at specific risk, for example, due to their travel or occupational needs. Physicians need to make decisions on a case-by-case basis and need to be very judicious in the prescription of medication to individuals who are not ill.

I agree but where are the doctors who are offering remedies for this outbreak. Where are the clinics opening up to deal with it. Where are the press releases in major centers like Mexico and New York. Does Homeopathy have a group Homeopaths without borders that can go to centers and help set up clinics?

John- excellent points. It seems that homeopaths have a difficult time uniting to address many important issues. Perhaps this forum will be the catalyst for greater action and cooperation here in the U.S.

Hi .I agree with you to have an organization of homeopaths without borders which can organize and send volunteer homeopaths to the hot points with a special instructions and common needed remedies ,like an emergency kit .

My son is an MD/Ph.D. in New York City. He just called to inform me that "all hell" is breaking out at the CDC in Atlanta. They have been caught with their pants down with this new strain of H1N1-- HongKong, Bird and Swine type A combined. Additionally, hospitals around the country are trying to find Tamiflu and again according the CDC- the national stocks have been totally depleted. Perhaps its time for the Homeopathic community to step up and offer viable alternatives??

I remember reading in Julian Winston's history of homeopathy that the Spanish Flu was the same year that aspirin became an over-the-counter medicine, and that the homeopaths reported that people who had taken aspirin were much sicker than people who had not. That makes sense when you consider that fever is an effective defense against virus... and that aspirin is associated with Reyes Syndrome, too. Too bad many people are fever phobic...

Hi .It's a very bad situation in Mexico ,killing more than 60 persons .Then spreading to U.K. by an airplane passenger .I think we should announce our readiness , having a proper strategy to help patients and also impliment proper preventive measures for all to be away of this lethal infection .

In 1948 Heinrich Mueller, the former head of the Gestapo, told his CIA interrogator that the most devastating plague in human history was man-made.
He was referring to the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 that infected 20% of the world's population and killed between 60 and 100 million people. This is roughly 3 times as many as were killed and wounded in World War One, and is comparable to WWII losses, yet this modern plague has disappeared down the memory hole.
Mueller said the flu started as a US army bacteriological warfare weapon that somehow infected US army ranks at Camp Riley KS in March 1918, and spread around the world.

He says that it "got out of control" but we cannot discount the horrible possibility that the "Spanish Flu" was a deliberate elite depopulation measure, and that it could be used again. Researchers have found connections between it and the current "Bird Flu."
