Well,
one cannot do anything else but to applaud this treatment. It is the classical approach to an abscess. The normal reaction against local infections is to form an absces, and its usual resolution is to burst. Sometimes it won't, specially with a high potency (it could just have been absorbed), but in this case the gelding responded beautifully.
The instilation of calendula into the wound has the very definite purpose of sealing (literaly) the exposed tissue against bacterial invasion. Calendula not only kills bacteria, but it also coagulates the proteins so an impermeable coat forms, and this coat acts as a physico-chemical barrier which bacteria won't pass nor use. It alows healing to come from within to the outside.
Gwenyth, just as we say in Spanish, " I take off ny hat".
Wonderful, just wonderful.
