50 Years of The Birth Control Pill

50 YEARS OF THE BIRTH CONTROL PILL

In May 2010 the “birth control pill” celebrated its 50^th birth day. It was in May 1960 that it got its final approval by the Government in the US and was sold in the market freely. In spite of the resistance by various religious groups as well as the Church in the beginning, it was finally an accepted thing. Orthodox religious groups believed that it will make way to free sex as well as prostitution. But this debate of what was moral and what was immoral went on till the pills were finally an accepted thing by most of the women and girls. Besides its Therapeutic effects, what they all wanted was Sexual Freedom.

Today the pill has become a part of life of many woman in many developed as well as developing countries. The claim as to what it all can do: Relief of pain during Menses, regular menstrual cycles, birth control and so on.

A research also shows that those on pills had longer life, lesser incidence of cancer as well as heart diseases.

But what do we as Homeopaths have to say about it?

Has there been a greater incidence of certain Gynaecological disorders ever since. Mainly Ovarian cysts, Fibroids, other hormonal disorders like that of the Thyroid gland, Sterility and so on…..

As we may look at it, there are painless regular menstrual cycles, and controlled bleeding. On the other hand it may be suppressing the symptoms which are commonly seen in most women.....Suppression?

Yes in true Homeopathic language suppressions lead to other problems. We may be giving relief to certain symptoms only to give rise to a bigger problem. That may be related to the other body organs.

A detailed study need to be done on this. On the other hand any patient coming to us who is on the pills, do we need to consider that what all new symptoms have come up ever since the other symptoms were suppressed? Besides this many talk of Sexual Freedom. Is this leading to over indulgence in sex? How do we handle a case of the lady on pill. Aren’t we missing some of the symptoms which have been suppressed?

Many questions but fewer answers!

Not many are willing to give up the pill. Hence what we are actually doing is just a short term & partial treatment. We do need to correlate the newer problems with the suppression which is taking place by this method of birth control. So the choice is between another means of birth control OR making way for newer diseases.

Comment by Dr Muhammed Rafeeque on June 29, 2010 at 5:50am: Our body can tolerate the chemicals and even toxic substances to some extent, but the hormones supplied in excess quantity is beyond its capacity. Instead of these hormonal pills, the government should promote other methods.

Sushil Bahl on June 29, 2010 at 11:13am: Majority of the patients,with chronic diseases or even acute , comes to us, after taking so many conventional medicines, which may be any thing like steroids, antibiotics, Amphetamines, Benzodiazapines,hormones,chemo therapy, etc etc, and we are treating them each day.Therefore for any one who is taking oral pills , is no exception.

Comment by Katja Schütt on June 29, 2010 at 2:28pm: This is definitely an interesting topic, especially as homeopath are again the better observer and have the necessary knowlegde to understand the close connections between cause and effects. Contraceptive pills are, besides vaccinations and antibiotics, a main factor that fuel and trigger the sycotic miasm and contribute to the increase of chronic diseases, which now appear at a much earlier age. Unfortunately they perfectly fit the often met "double income - no kids" attitude, which mirrors our current societal norm that earning money is of higher priority than family life.
With homeopathy we can certainly help the female constitution to better tolerate them, but on the other hand they constitute a factor which may maintain disease states so that their negative health effects will only vanish upon change of regimen, i.e. abandonment. They may even give rise to the establishment of a chronic artifical, iatrogen disease that weakens the vital force tremendously and suppresses the natural disease, and which Hahnemann called already the "the most deplorable, the most incurable" diseases. So homeopathy may help to a certain extent, but creating a new awareness as to approaching life and the values which are worth living, is also necessary.

We are treating many who are already on some medication or the other, as Dr. Bahl mentions; but it it better to stop the pills since they are avoidable. This will give a clearer picture of the problem.
I appretiate Katja's veiws on "double income-no kids" attitude. Unfortunately people think only of the present and not bother about what will happens few years later. They prefer suppressing a smaller problem now and ask for treatment later when it gets beyond control. [...."the most deplorable, the most incurable" diseases]
Hence what best we can do is to discourage the use of the pills at an individual level, for it may not be possible at a larger scale.

Comment by Katja Schütt on July 1, 2010 at 5:18am: I agree that it may not be possible at a larger scale due to the missing awareness, which will also prevent cure in general at a larger scale. Homeopathy can raise our level of consciousness by curing the mind which views reality in a distorted perspective. But, it will only cure those who are ready to learn their lessons and to follow their true path (dharma).
