Creating Waves of Awareness

The earliest card repertory is that of Dr. William Jefferson Guernsey- "Guernsey's Boenninghausen's slips". Here Dr. Guernsey used the medicines which were in Boenninghausen's Therapeutic Pocket Book.

Later Dr. H. C. Allen improved these original slips by adding more remedies and they were known as- "Allen's Boenninghausen's Slips".

The following is the advertisement of "Allen's Boenninghausen's Slips" made by Dr. H. C. Allen himself, appeared in The Medical Advance in its volume XXXVI in 1908. It is self explanatory. See it yourself!

Dear Ginny

Sorry to say, it is not in Winston's library. I checked the list. Only two card repertories he had-

1) General Analysis - Boger's card repertory

2) Punched Card Spindle Repertory - by Robert H, Farley

Ginny & others,

Since the budding stage of repertory making every conscious homeopaths were realizing that prescribing through the process of repertorization is the most authentic way to make a prescription. But the major drawback of this system is time & labor consuming. That is why we see, various stalwarts stared to think for short cut methods to reach similimum by using repertory, with minimum errors.

One of these great efforts was this CARD concept. The others being the concept of "Eliminating Rubrics" of Drs. M. Tyler & John Weir; different mechanically aided repertories like "Auto-visual repertory" by Dr. R. P. Patel, etc.

After the advent of different computer softwares the card concept is becoming obslete. Some of the homeopaths are still using it with good results.

Slowly, it is becoming an object of academic & historical interest rather than of practical utility. But still, hats off to those stalwarts for their innovative thinking about making this kind of mechanically aided repertories.

A present times, some of the card repertories still in use are-

1) Kishore Cards: Made by Dr. Jugal Kishore. Based on Kent's concept;
2) Sankaran's Cards: Made by Dr. P. Sankaran. Based on the concept of Boger, etc.

The following is one of the Sankaran's cards-

Dear Ginny,

Dr. Margarette L. Tyler was one of the close students of Dr. J. T. Kent. Dr. Kent asked Tyler to make a punched card repertory based on his repertory. Accordingly Tyler was preparing the same under the able supervision of Dr. Kent himself. She almost finished her compillation, but Dr. Kent told her not to publish it because it was faulty.

This much we can gather from the history. It was around 1905/ 1906 I think. There was an article by Dr. M. L. Tyler herself published in The Homoeopathic Recorder, from which I gather this information. Dr. Tyler wrote there the whole manuscript of her unfinished work was still kept in her shelf.

In some of the latter publications some authors mentiond Tyler published her cards around 1912. But I don't think it was ever been published. If anybody has any information regarding this , please let me know.

Dear Arindam !
I never was much interested in history, it was just too much to learn by heart at school/uni. But when it comes to homeopathy things are really different... and it seems to be like a puzzle to set all the informations together, fascinating !
I wish all the old homeopathic journals would be digitalized and published as e-books (for free of course!) so that all homeopath can benefit from it.
I love to read literature from the old masters, especially the old German homeopathy journals are a wealth of information ! Your informations on card-repertories are completely new for me, so thanks a lot for these interesting details !

Best regards,
Katja
