Ayurveda Characteristics Of The Three Doshas

The table below shows some of the main characteristics of the three Doshas for your scrutiny.

rLung, (Vata) the wind element is an aspect of the breath and it is closely associated with the nervous system. Normally, vata produces enthusiasm and creativity.

Its balance is easiliy disturbed by desire and attachment. Concern with external factors, like the wind disturbing the treetops, produce excessive mental activity, which manifests itself as troubled, erratic thinking, capricious moods, excited loquacity and active dreams. This kind of stress, causes hurried, impatient, busy and often obsessional minds. As a result of being a bit impulsive and scatter-brained their finances can end up in a mess.

Elemental Properties and Modalities:
Light, mobile and quick. Coarse, rough, hard and piercing. These sensations are exemplified by the pains of arthritis. Its roughness can be seen in the hair and fingernails. It is dry and absorbant like the spongy tissues of the lungs.

We can easily find many examples of rLung symptoms which reflect these properties in the repertory and produce an analysis which gives a list the remedies of this type, (square brackets indicate B. Bhattacharya's analysis of each one).

Tripa, (Pitta) inner heat, is associated with the endochrine system. It normally gives clarity, determination and courage. When over-stimulated it manifests as competitiveness, then other people are percieved as being in the wrong, and we often feel that we are under attack. The result is dictatorial egotism, irritability and anger. When anger is out of control it becomes hatred and violence, which are often reflected in destructive dreams of battles and fighting.

Elemental Properties and Modalities:
Hot and dry. Light and quick. It is sharp, acidic, pungent and purging. Boils, ulcers and acid indigestion are typical Tripa complaints.

Badkan (Kapha) is associated with fluids, especially with the blood, and it also mixes with the earth element. Its softness and smoothness give tolerance and love. Its heaviness helps us to relax, so sleep is usually deep and there can be romantic dreams.

When it is stimulated by delusions, its heavy nature gives rise to physical and emotional sluggishness, apathy and dullness. This may produce a rather boring and monotonous voice.

Opinions and relationships are formed cautiously. Opinions are then held doggedly, which gives rise to ignorance and can result in a lack of consideration for others[6]. In financial dealings, their cautious investments can amount to miserliness, and this greed itself produces a tendency to envy.

Elemental Properties and Modalities:
The water element in the body is cool, soft, oily, sticky and slow, like mucous. Earth is dry, heavy, solid and slow, like bone. Poor circulation and congestion are typical complaints.

Steph, Thank you for putting this all together and sharing this information. I was fascinated about ten years ago at a Aruyvedic seminar at the correlations and similarities between that system and homeopathy. I will take some time to study this further.

yes the doshas of ayurveda are closely related to miasms of homeopathy.

Ayurveda and homeopathy are closely related, but there are some major differences!

1. Cause of disease: Miasms/Doshas

2. Like cures like, the basic principle of homeopathy is related to Ayurvedic concept "ushnam usnena shanthi", which means warmth cures warmth. One more ancient concept is, "take the nail with the nail". Both these concepts are more related to Isopathy (same cures same), because in homeopathy, same material is not used, but material with similar action. To make this more clear, Hahnemann has used "whilst differing in kind" in the 26th aphorism!

3. The method of trituration in homeopathy is also related to ayurvedic concept - "mardanam gunamardanam". But, in ayurveda, the quantity of the substance is same throughout the process (except for toxic materials).

Eventhough, there are some relations, there is a major difference between homeopathy and Ayurveda.

1. Ayurveda is strongly against 'Single remedy concept'. They always use combinations to remove the side effects of each ingredient; hence the classic texts give details on the preparation of medicine using several herbs (in malayalam, it is called Yogangal). The real ayurveda does not support the administration of extract from a single plant. Charaka, the great physician had strongly criticized the single remedy concept (ottamooli chikithsa). Ottamooli is the malayalam word for "Single Ingredient". He criticized the ottamooli physicians as “siddha sadhikans”. According to him, they can’t differentiate the various disease situations, and that method has no integrity!
2. They use different preparations together. Example: Kashayas, asavas, choornas at the same time.
3. External application is a major part of ayurvedic treatment.
4. They use therapeutic vomiting (vamana) and purging (virechana).
5. Blood letting, cupping, leeching, etc are also used.

In this book "Tridosha of Homeopathy" author explained how Homeopathy can work in parallel
to Aurvedic principles . I read this book many times before I started my practice in homeopathy.
As per theory of pulse in this book helped me lot .It is my pleasure that Dr Bhattcharyas work
appesred on this platform. Thanks a lot.

I am so delighted by all these replies! Yes, Ven. Benoytosh Bhattacharya has written a wonderful little book on the subject, and I am following his lead. I am applying the theory of the Doshas to develop a better unederstanding of my Materia Medica.

The fact that the balance and quality of the elements in the body gives rise to temperament is an indication that, as in the three classical Homeopathic miasms, we are observing the effects a much deeper layer than the manifest, conscious, emotional and mental state.
In his book on Tridosha (1975), Bhattacharyya identifies Syphilis as a Pitta (fire) disturbance, which indicates that the study of an inbalance of the Doshas can be applied to any disease whatsoever.
This method could be used to identify the essence of the Samarium column (Stage 8). They are all forceful folk... all manifesting the Pitta energy. If we can say the Lanthanide row has an affinity with Air, Samarium would be classified as a [V5-P5] state.

Is there any link between OM mantra and homeopathy?

As per the Hindu religion,the OM mantra is a representation of srishti, stithi and samhara ( birth, life and death )

Srishti means creation- Psora

Stithi means existence- Sycosis

Samhara means destruction- Syphilis

Dr.Rafeeque &Other Homoeopaths. As per the Hindu religion, There are three God[devtas] These are the- Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh( birth, life and death )

Srishti means creation- Psora --Brhma is creater of srishti,In Aruved it is Vat[Air]

Stithi means existence- Sycosis—Vishnu is responsible for Life activities for survival, In Aruved it is Kaf[water]

Samhara means destruction- Syphilis—Mahesh is resposible for destruction[Death], In Aruved it is Pitta[Agni or Aag]

Yes, I see how the miasms are reflected in the three Gunas (creation - maintenance -destruction). Thanks everyone. Here's yet another aspect...

The three doshas each have their own cycle of rest and activity, which gives rise to a very familiar and straightforward time modality for each one.

During the working week we are usually drawing on the power of Tripa/Pitta (fire) and Bhadkan/Kapha (earth+water) to accomplish our goals (rLung), which usually produces excessive rLung (air) energy - and stress! This active phase can supported by applying techniques such as N.L.P. to boost optimism, power and confidence.

However, when we get home we want to power-down and relax. Relaxation allows our energies dissolve into the softness of earth element (Bhadkan) and eventually have a deep and restful sleep. If needed we can support this powering down by relaxing with hypnotherapy or meditation, which can effectively rebalance the doshas by turning off the Tripa and rLung energies.

There is no harm in turning our energies right up to the max - if we know how to relax!

Deconstruction of Pulsatilla Doshas

While Bhattacharyya describes Pulsatilla as a Vatta and Pitta remedy, the rubrics I studied indicated a predominantly Kapha state combined with a lesser Pitta influence. A closer look at the Kapha and Pitta aspects of familiar Pulsatilla rubrics describing the mental/emotional state gives a clearer picture.

Pulsatilla: Kapha, Dominant (Emotional Sphere)

  • Feeling forsaken. Anguish. Anger, conversation, from; when obliged to answer. Loathing, life. Death, desires.

Pulsatilla: Pitta, Secondary (Energetic Sphere)

  • Affectionate. Amorous. Audacity. Effeminate. Adluterous

Pulsatilla: Vata, Least influence (Intellectual Sphere)

  • Contrary. Change, desire for. Embittered, exasperated. Jealousy. Hurry.
It is clear that all three doshs are present, and are all disturbed in Pulsatilla, creating instability in each sphere. Pulsatilla is by nature capricious and the predominant emotion is the product of the action of the most profoundly disturbed dosha.
It seems that the three spheres have the potential to exert their influence at different times resulting in the cycle of symptoms that are actually observed in Pulsatilla's life.
