‘Everyone need not take H1N1 tests’

BANGALORE: “Do not overload the lab with swabs as it is struggling hard to clear the backlog. Nearly Rs 75 lakh have already been spend on just getting reagents,” said Dr V Ravi, head of the neuro-virology department at Nimhans.

He was speaking at a discussion titled “Swine Flu in Bangalore - Lessons Learnt and Preparedness,” organised by the Biosecurity Group of National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) on Wednesday.

“Even the rapid antigen test done for the H1N1 may not be found to be accurate. There were cases where some patients without any symptoms have tested positive for H1N1. In case a patient is positive for H1N1, he may not be affected by the same virus even for thirty years,” he added.

The virology department has tested 1296 out of 4278 samples, of which 293 were positive, 774 negative and 2982 cases are pending, from which 769 in category C. Only 20 per cent of the samples received by the virology department have tested positive.

He also said there were no anti-viral medicines for earlier pandemics, but fortunately for H1N1, Tamiflu tablets are available in hospitals to fight the virus.

Dr Shashidhar Buggi, director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, said all persons need not undergo the tests and that H1N1 is self-limiting, unless the person develops secondary infections or is immuno-compromised.

During the discussion meet, it was highlighted that the integration of homeopathy with allopathy will help in improving immunity. As homeopathy is an age-old medicine, there are no reports of sideeffects.
