External Application of Homoeopathic Medicine

Can Homoeopathic medicine be given by the external route in human body? Hahnemann advises in Organon of medicine, fifth edition, that the Homoeopathic medicine can be given by the external routes. In aphorism 288, Hahnemann writes that when Homoeopathic medicine is introduced orally, it first affects tongue, mouth and stomach. Hahnemann advises to introduce Homoeopathic medicine through Nasal inhalation or mouth inhalation in this Para. He writes more elaborately in the footnotes under same aphorisms. In fact, Hahnemann perhaps faced the problem with the nature of patient to avoid taking the medicine orally, as we faces even today. Patient generally is not willing to take the medicine frequently and avoid the repetition. In this Para, footnote deals with the process of the application of the Homoeopathic medicine.

Now what I do, I advise to patient to take the potentised dilution of the selected Homoeopathic medicine. I generally used two, three or four medicine at a time, unless and until I am not sure for a prescription of single medicine according to rule of Hahnemann, because I would not like to take risk with the life of patient for the sake of saving Hahnemannian philosophy. I give the medicine orally in the potency and I advise patient to rub the potentised dilution of selected one medicine on face, selected second medicine on right arm, selected third medicine on left arm, selected fourth medicine on the sides of abdomen or in-between the gap of epigastria and navel. These potentised dilutions prepared with the alcohol dry quickly but their affects are very miraculous. This method suggested by the Hahnemann works miraculously and patient does not feel any botheration for taking regular medications in frequent intervals.

Here we see, how Hahnemann have experimented the use of medicine through external route. He also advises to inhale the medicine through nose and mouth. That’s why I am using Homoeopathic medicine through nebuliser.

When patient is not in a position to tell his complaints to Physician, what should be action taken by the physician to save the life of sick personal ? There could be many ways for application of medicine, here what I experienced in practice, the routes of the application of Homoeopathic remedies.

Repy to your first question "about time sequence", the repitition of the remedies, which is selected by the physician, is dependent upon the close and keen observation of the treating physician, when in need he can do so frequently or in long intervals, if physician understand that so and so medicine is not needed, he can withdraw the selected medicine. Finaly it is upto the decision of physician, when and where he like to apply medicines.

Reply to second question ; "the acting remedy" ; the main aim of physician is to provide relief to patient, for which he came to physician. Patient is not a medical person. He want only relief and want to minimise his complaints.If he feels relief that means the treatment is effective, if not that means, physician should select the other remedy or he should remove the obstacle of cure.

Regarding potencies, I use mostly 200 / 1000 alcoholic liquid potency in centicimal scale.

"Pellet" ; no, absolute not, I use all the medicine's potency in centicimal scale prepared in absolute alcohol. The potentised alcoholic medicine is applied on the selected parts of the patient's skin, several times a day.

Does the patient apply the remedy with a cotton ball? By putting drops into a dish then using the hand to apply to the arm?

Thanks for comments. I am afraid, I have never used the "cotton ball" method's of the application of Homoeopathic medicines. Yes, in case of injuries or painful condition like joints pain, toothache, Muscular pain etc etc I advice to apply Mother Tictures of Remedies with water, oil, vaseline or plain alcoholic solution.

In my opinion, direct open application of alcoholic solution is much better to avoid the more oxydation of the potencies. However, better you experience the "cotton ball" methods at least in 10 patients and write me with your experiences. I apprecate your suggestion and I will also try this way aplication of Homoeopathic medicine.

Does it matter which remedy is acting? When you need to change remedies, how do you know? When there are aggravations, do you look at the MM for all of the remedies that you have given? Or you are doing this skin application to avoid aggravation? How did you select the points where the remedy is applied?

Comment by Dr. Desh Bandhu Bajpai on July 5, 2009 at 8:52am: ...........Reply by Dr. DBBajpai...........the selection of remedies for a sick person is similar to select a medicine as usualby MM, Repertory or repertorisation etc. , but it depends upon the totality of the symptoms. When there is spilt totalities are found , more than one remedies are needed for application, then you have to select medicine according to need of patient. Suppose a patient is having Vomitting with nausea, severe acute coryza, Colitis and stomatitis with fever. Immidiately if you select Ipecauc for vomitting and nausea, Aconite for severe coryza. Merc sol for colitis and stomatitis. When you apply these medicines on selected parts of the body, when you observe that vomitting is relived, withdraw Ipecauc and continue other medicines, when you observe that fver and coryza is better, withdraw Aconite and continue Merc sol, as and when in need.

You can select appripriate remedy by oral route also. There is no specific point as in Acupucture/Accupressure, but you select a smooth skin place round about 3 Inch in cicumference and apply medicine on that place. For other medicine you should choose the another site for second and third medicine and so on. Better to use these medicnes on face and cheeks, sides of the neck, both arms, calf mucles, side of the abdomen and other smooth areas of the body.

Comment by Rochelle Marsden on August 30, 2009 at 2:13pm: When my mother in law had pneumonia before I went to see her I prepared a liquid potency of Ant Tart . 6 She was in the emergency room that evening with a mask over her mouth and was not expected to survive. Since she had Altzheimer's and was in her 80's she had no quality of life. I poured the Ant Tart on her wrist a couple of times. No one could believe that the following morning she was sat up and eating!! She went on to live another couple of years after that before fading away.

Comment by Joy Wong on August 31, 2009 at 11:21pm: How interesting! I do remember when i was studying my lecturer mentioned that for sensitive patients you could dose onto pilluets and apply to the wrist with tape and remove as symptoms disappeared. Personally i havent done this.
