HOMOEOPATHIC POSTGRADUATE RESIDENTIAL SUMMER SCHOOL OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF HOMOEOPATHY INDIA, NAGPUR

The National academy of homeopathy India, Nagpur, under the able leadership of Dr Kasim Chimthanawala, has successfully conducted the 19th summer school 'GURUKUL' at Shaad Homoeopathic Hospital Complex & Research Centre, Nagpur, Maharashtra. The 15 days programme was obviously a Homoeopathic reality show wherein lectures were given on the principles and practice of homoeopathy and live cases were treated using classical Homoeopathy. The subjects taught in the UG and PG curriculum were covered in a systematic way using a number of protocols developed by several years of research. Practitioners and students from different parts of India as New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chattishgarh, Uttaranchal, Maharashtra and Kerala attended this Summer school. The faculty took utmost care in giving equal importance to the theoretical and practical aspects of homeopathy. The scope and limitations of homeopathy were also covered with a detailed management protocols in different types of cases. Each day, the program started with one hour of Yoga and Meditation training. The relevance of each Asana in relation to the organs and body functions were pointed out. The training of meditation really helped the participants to double the confidence and grasping power. A healthy vegetarian diet and a friendly atmosphere of the campus provided extra energy to the students.

The lectures were conducted at Late Dr. J N Kanjilal Memorial Auditorium attached to the hospital. Right from the beginning of lectures, each teacher encouraged the students to ask queries with good intentions so that no one should go out of school with an unanswered query. Vast experience of Prof. Dr Kasim Chimthanawala, a pioneer in homeopathy, was shared during each session. He shared his experience as a modern medical doctor and a Dermatologist and his homeopathic education in Kolkata under many eminent homoeopaths like Dr. Kanjilal, Dr B K Bose and Dr S. K. Dubey.

Homeopathic cardiology is an untouched topic for most of us. Dr Aadil Chimthanawala, a homeopathic cardiologist and clinician who has introduced Khandait-Aadil syndrome into the field of medicine shared his experience in the treatment of cardiac emergencies using homeopathic medicines. Students also got a chance to visit 'Aadil Homoeo Heart Care Center' at Nagpur city where hundreds of so called incurable cardiac cases are treated successfully through homeopathy. ECG taking and interpretation was also taught in detail. At Shaad hospital, under the guidance of Dr Sagira Chimthanawala and Dr Fathema Chimthanawala, students could also attend labor cases and emergencies during labor and DNC managed successfully using only homeopathic medicines.

Notably, the teachers gave great importance to the essence and the exact meaning of words mentioned in the classical books. Nowadays reading the printed books is out of fashion! The school emphasized the benefits of reading printed books and also shared a number of hidden points in Organon, Materia Medica, Repertory and other books like Allen's keynotes. The B K Bose library attached to the academy is a huge treasury of information as it contains a number of new and old books, which also includes the books that are out of print or unpublished. The mistakes in some of the classical books were pointed out throughout the lectures. The precise meaning of each word used by the pioneers in the classical books was highlighted and the students were asked to note down along with the modern terminologies for future reference. At the end of the summer school, most of the pages of participants' textbook had some additional information written during each lecture, so that every student could return home with gems of knowledge.

The debatable topics in homeopathy were dealt during each session and almost all participants got an opportunity to share their own views. Explanation of the unique concepts of the Academy such as Case types, Remedy types, Rubric types, Case analysis, and the application of the same knowledge on live patients was a wonderful experience for the young doctors. The study of Materia Medica as a person and as a patient was a new information for most of the students. The explanation of miasms and their evolution and how one miasm blends with other miams was quite satisfactory. The academy also shared a number of the protocols they are successfully using in the management of emergency cases like Angina Pectoris, Hypertensive states, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, Acute Myocardial Infarct, Respiratory failure etc. These protocols are of great use in the quick selection of the similimum in acute emergencies.

Each day, two hours were allotted for case taking, case presentation and case discussion with the teachers and other students. The faculty gave great importance to the art of case taking, precautions while taking the case especially the mental symptoms and the performance of each student was assessed. “A doctor should have the skill to present the case before the audience”, hence the art of case presentation was taught in a systematic way. The case taking format developed by Shaad Hospital is very useful in practice and for the anamnesis of the case. A very unique case analysis protocol was dictated and the practical application of the same on the original cases provided extra knowledge to the students. The method of erecting the different levels of totality as per the case is highlighted. Considering the need of the beginners, some clinical tips were given to manage acute cases. The side effects of repeated symptomatic treatment were emphasized even while giving the clinical tips. The clinical classes provided maximum importance to clinical examination and disease diagnosis. The comparison of each clinical findings and diseases with the language of materia medica and repertory provided extra knowledge to the students. The training also included the art of interpretation of symptoms and the conversion of the same into the language of Repertory.

Prime importance was given to the homoeopathic management of the cases. The process of mental preparation of the patient before the administration of the drug was a new knowledge for most of the participants. A homeopathically prepared patient will never go behind any suppressive mode of treatment whenever any elimination appears on his body during the course of treatment. Hence the outcome of treatment in such patients is much better. The lectures also depicted the situations when not to prescribe and when to give placebo to the patient. How to differentiate an elimination process from the disease aggravation, and Do’s and Don’ts while dealing with such cases were also pointed out. The school gave great importance to the emergency case management using homeopathy, and also suggested the different precautions and steps to be taken while treating such cases.

Drug proving was a fantastic experience for each prover as it strengthened their faith in homeopathy. A good number of provers started getting left sided headache and pain in the left eye, a few hours after taking the dose. At the end of the summer school, when the chairman announced that the drug used for re-proving was Spigelia, all provers saluted our pioneers who proved drugs in those days so accurately. A blood donation camp was also arranged in association with the Gurukul. On the occasion of the 255th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, most of the participants donated blood as a part of service to the humanity in the camp arranged by the Academy.

Apart from the theoretical and practical knowledge, the Thesis writing and presentation before the audience helped the participants to double their confidence level. It also helped for the development of public speaking skills and personality. The theses topics were chosen with much care and each participant was urged to contribute his or her version of the topic rather than copy from ready-made text books of homoeopathy.

In a nutshell, the 19th summer school was a unique experience and it proved the fact that there should be no secrets in science; it should be transferred to the next generation.

Dr Rafeeque, your blog on "19th summer school GURUKUL,at Shaad Homeopathic Hospital was very informative and inspiring.

It was very heartening to learn how Homeopathy is advancing in India in 21st century, with such training session at such institutions as Shaad homeopathic hospital, and Aadil Homeopathic Heart care center in Nagpur city.

With such work going on in field of Homeopathy and its teaching ,is sure sign that Homeopathy is in safe hands in India which i consider a bastion of Homeopathy and leader in research in this field.

What a great stride in homeopathy, to have a hospital specializing in heart diseases, that "Aadil homeopathic heart care center" stands for. and to have Shaad research center all in one city;

I would like to know if you can publish the "case taking format " developed by Shaad Hospital, and the "case analysis protocol" that you have mentioned.

It will be i think very useful for all members of HWC and i am sure, learning from the experience those wonderful institutions will help us in expanding our knowledge.

With my best wishes.

Diagrammatic representation of evolution of the sick

Healthy state >>>> Tendencies (multi-systemic manifestation)>>>>Diathesis (mono-systemic affection)>>>> Disease (reversible pathology)>>>>> Disease (irreversible pathology)>>>> Ultimates and end results >>>> Secondary symptoms.
