Emotions are of two types

Positive emotions result in feelings of competency.

Negative emotions result in feelings of inadequacy.

Inadequacy is relative to others and their feelings for us. The negative emotions in relationships are often unpleasant because they affect self-esteem and the sense of competency as a social part. However, jealousy, obsession, shyness and loneliness all in their ownways, are complex combinations of feelings, thoughts and behaviors.

Jealousy is a complex emotion spanning from normality to pathology. it involves the perception of a threatened or loss of a valued relationship to a rival, either real or imagined. According to its intensity and persistence, it can range, from normal to pathological states (Parker & Barret, 1997).

1. feeling resentment against someone because of that person's rivalry, success, or advantages (often followed by of ): He was jealous of his rich brother.
2. feeling resentment because of another's success, advantage, etc. (often followed by of ): He was jealous of his brother's wealth.
3. characterized by or proceeding from suspicious fears or envious resentment: a jealous rage; jealous intrigues.
4. inclined to or troubled by suspicions or fears of rivalry, unfaithfulness, etc., as in love or aims: a jealous husband.
5. solicitous or vigilant in maintaining or guarding something: The American people are jealous of their freedom.
6. Bible . intolerant of unfaithfulness or rivalry: The Lord is a jealous God.
   
   

In the case of jealousy these are often treated as coping behaviors. Jealousy can be of five different types-

1. Possessive jealousy is a response to perceived violation of ‘property rights’. For example, feelingof possessive jealousy if a partner acts in an independentway.
2. Exclusive jealousy is a response to occasions when one is omitted from a lovedone’s important experiences or when he is not allowed to share a loved one’sprivate world.
3. Competitive jealousy is a feeling of inadequacy if one partner is actually better than him while others are at something where he himself wishes to excel.
4. Egotistical jealousy is the feeling that his way is the only way. In short, it is a desire to stay as he is, being uninfluenced to adapt to other people’s wishes or needs.
5. Fearful jealousy is a reaction to the threat of loneliness or rejection.
   
   
   
   

Another school says jealousy may be of seven types.

3. left out syndrome or fear of abandonment or being left out.
4. inconsideration
5. envy or feeling not good enough
6. co-dependence or insecurity.
7. ego or feel of rejection or feeling inadequate.
   
   

Jealousy can be communicated in different ways. People have a range of different approaches that are used to evoke jealousy in a partner in order to sustain the relationship by regaining the partner’s attention and commitment to it. These may be appearing to withdraw from the relationship (relational distancing), pretending to flirt withother people (flirtation façade), and discussing the possibilities of relational alternatives.
